David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup 2023

Overlooked during the ECB annual contracting process for 2023-24, England's David Willey is set to retire from all international cricket at the end of the ongoing 2023 WC in India.

Willey, 33, is the only member of the current England World Cup squad to not bag a central contract for the upcoming season, announced last week.

"I never wanted this day to come," Willey wrote in a social media post, announcing his decision on Wednesday (November 1).

"From a young boy, I've only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England.

with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup.

Willey however, noted that he will continue to ply his trade in the shorter formats (T20 and the Hundred) for franchises and domestic sides.

Willey was named Northamptonshire captain in the T20 Blast last year and also played for Welsh Fire in the Hundred.

He is due to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the second edition of the ILT20, in January.

At the IPL, Willey is currently contracted by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Willey said he would "give my everything and more" in the final three group stage matches, against Australia, Netherlands, and Pakistan respectively.
